The Adelphi University women's basketball team handed Dowling College its first loss of the season, 79-73, Saturday night at Woodruff Hall. Sophomore Jesse Dlabola collected a team-high 17 points, along with nine assists and seven steals to lead the Panthers. Adelphi improves to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the NYCAC, while Dowling drops to 4-1 overall, 3-1 in the NYCAC.
Junior Jaime Douglas chipped in 16 points and sophomore Courtney Carpenter added eight points while pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
With five ties in the first half, both teams battled back and forth for control. Adelphi saw its largest lead of the half, 25-21, at the 11:09 mark on a field goal by Douglas. Sophomore Melanie Mangone notched 10 of her 12 points in the first half, going 2-for-4 from three-point range. The Golden Lions were 50 percent from the field and trailed by only one point at the half, 41-40.
A one-point margin continued to separate the teams in the second half. Dowling went on a 5-0 lead to open up a three-point advantage, 51-48, with 15:36 left in the contest. Adelphi would go on a 15-9 run over the next eight minutes and never relinquished its lead. The Panthers pulled away in the final two minutes to take the game, 79-73.
The Golden Lions were led by Mary Kacic with a game-high 19 points and 10 assists. Zulmary Andino had 18 points and five assists.
On the game, the Panthers shot 42.5 percent and the Golden Lions were 44.9 percent from the field. Defensively, Adelphi outrebounded Dowling, 48-38.
Adelphi takes a break for the holidays before returning to action December 28-29 at the Stonehill College Tournament. The Panthers will face Assumption on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and host Stonehill on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
