The Adelphi University men's basketball team fell to UMass-Lowell, 81-66, Friday night at Lowell. The Panthers fall to 3-4 overall while the No. 13 ranked River Hawks improve to 6-0 overall for its best start in school history.
Senior Wayne Nelson led Adelphi with 19 points, five rebounds and three steals. Junior Thomas McCormack added 10 points and junior Juma Allen had a team-high six rebounds.
The River Hawks opened a 6-2 lead to start the half before the Panthers answered on a 8-4 run capped off by a three-point field goal by Jamaal Wagner. UML again opened up a five point lead which Adelphi again closed on back-to-back three-pointers by Nelson. This would prove to be the last Panther lead of the contest as UML finished the half on a 21-5 run. Adelphi shot just 33.3 percent from the field while UML was 48.3 percent.
UMass-Lowell contined to dominate in the second half, opening up a 25 point lead over the Panthers, their largest of the game, with 12:15 on the clock. Senior Tony Kellman picked up all 12 of his points in the second half, going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, as Adelphi continued to struggle managing only to close to within 17 points, 69-52, with 3:48 remaining.
The River Hawks were led by Dana Jones with 17 points followed by Elad Inbar with 12 points. With the win, UML now boasts its longest undefeated start in school history.
The loss snaps Adelphi's three-game win streak against UMass-Lowell, bringing their all-time series record to 3-3. Prior to tonight, the last loss to the River Hawks was December 9, 1989.
Adelphi takes a break for the holiday season, returning to action January 4 at Philadelphia.
