Volleyball Drops to C.W. Post in Five Game Thriller

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team fell to conference foe C.W. Post in a five-game nail-biter, 30-29, 29-31, 24-30, 31-29, 9-15, Wednesday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers finish the regular season with an 18-16 overall record and 5-7 in the conference. The Pioneers are 14-20 overall and 6-6 in the NYCAC.

The night was bittersweet for the eight graduating seniors Amber Butler, Mary Krines, Brianne MacArthur, Bernadette Mearini, Veronica Mullen, Cynthia Prizzi and Jenna Sweeney as they were honored just minutes before the start of the match.

Krines led the Panthers with 18 kills along with nine digs. Mearini finished her season with her 10th double-double, collecting 17 kills and a team-high 19 digs. MacArthur posted 53 assists. Sweeney set a new Adelphi single-match record with 10 blocks along with nine kills. The previous record of nine blocks in a match was held by Kristen West set in 1997.

The Pioneers were led by freshman Lauren Dunne with 21 kills. Senior Wendy Begay had a game-high 31 digs and senior Christie Cooke registered 71 assists and 15 digs.

With the loss, the Panthers become the No. 8 seed going into the NYCAC Tournament and will face No.1 New Haven. The No. 7 seed Pioneers face No.2 NYIT. Both games are Saturday, November 9, with the higher seed as host site. Game time for Adelphi/New Haven is 7 p.m. and C.W. Post/NYIT game is at 2 p.m.
