The Adelphi University men's basketball team topped Bridgeport University, 93-68, in its season home-opener, Tuesday night at Woodruff Hall. Junior Dwayne Thompson led the Panthers with 20 points, going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc and 7-for-8 from the field. Led by Thompson, a total of five Adelphi players scored in double figures.
Senior Wayne Nelson had 19 points and nine rebounds, just missing the double-double. Senior Tony Kellman collected 14 points. Senior Sherman Whittenburg and sophomore Sean Ramirez posted 10 points each. Junior Juma Allen had a team and career-high 11 rebounds to go along with nine points.
The Panthers executed a well-rounded game, shooting nearly 56 percent from the field, including 7-for-10 from three point range. Adelphi's defense was relentless, as they outrebounded Bridgeport, 45-28.
The Purple Knights were led by Gordon James with 17 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Adelphi improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the NYCAC. The Purple Knights fall to 2-1 and 0-1 in the conference.
