Junior forward Jamie Douglas registered 18 points, pulling down 11 rebounds to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 72-56 win over Pace University, in its season home-opener Saturday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 1-0 overall while the Setters drop to 1-1 on the season.
Sophomore forward Courtney Carpenter (Tom's River, N.J.) posted a career-high 18 points and added seven rebounds. Sophomore transfer Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in 11 points in her first game for the Panthers.
"I am very excited about our entire team's performance, especially on defense," Head Coach Kelley Watts said. "I know we have some things we need to work on as well, but overall we were able to force several key turnovers."
Adelphi opened up the game on a 28-10 run in the first 10 minutes of play, spurred in part by Douglas' 12 first-half points. The Panthers realized their biggest lead of the half, 34-13, at the 7:31 mark. The Setters responded on a 20-5 run, holding Adelphi to just five points over the last seven minutes. The Panthers, however, still managed to shoot just under 52% in the first half. At the buzzer, the Setters trailed by just six points, 39-33.
The Panthers immediately took control in the second half, opening a fifteen-point lead within the first six minutes of play. The Setters rallied back on a 13-4 run, 55-49, with 8:31 remaining. A field goal by sophomore guard Jesse Dlabola (Levittown, N.Y.) spurred a late Panther run and a key layup by freshman center Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) gave Adelphi a 17-point advantage with less than five minutes on the clock. At the end of regulation, Adelphi picked up its first victory of the 2003 campaign, 72-56.
The Setters were led by junior guard Andrea Boone (Schenectady, N.Y.) with 12 points. Freshman center Andrea Burch (Voorheesville, N.Y.) had a team-high 11 rebounds.
On the game Adelphi shot 42.1% from the field to Pace's 39.1%. The Panther defense forced 36 Setter turnover's and collected 15 steals in the game.
