Merrimack Upsets Men's Basketball, 73-65

Waltham, Mass. - Merrimack used 19 points from Pierre Downing (Trenton, N.J.) and 15 from Korran Rivers (Quebec City, Que.) to upset the two-time defending Northeast Region champion Adelphi, 73-65. The Panthers fall to 1-1 on the season.

Senior guard Tony Kellman (Queens, N.Y.) led a balanced attack for Adelphi with 14 points with fellow backcourt mate Thomas McCormack (Breezy Point, N.Y.) added 13.

Merrimack, which led by as many as 12, had four players in double figures with forward Justin Leith (Mercerville, N.J.) putting 14 points on the board and Basil Wajd (Boston) added 13 for the victors. Merrimack, which trailed only at 2-0, took control with a 14-2 first-half run that turned a 19-19 game into a 33-21 contest and led by six at the break, 41-35. The lead in the second half stayed between six and ten points throughout.

Both teams struggled from three-point land with Merrimack missing all ten of its attempts and Adelphi making only one of 21.

Next up, Adelphi returns home to host conference foe Bridgeport in its season home-opener, Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
