The Adelphi men's soccer team finished the 2002 campaign with a victory over conference foe Oneonta State, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Stiles Field. Adelphi snaps a six game winless streak to finish the season 5-12-1 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC). The Red Dragons fall to 5-9-4 overall, 2-3 in the ASC.
Prior to the start of today's game, Adelphi honored its six graduating seniors, Stephen Elliot, Haruto Imamura, Nick Nowakowski, Torgier Solemdal, Anders Salomonsson and Igor Yatsenko.
However it was freshman Padraig Drew that picked up the first goal for the Panthers in the 23rd minute of play. Sophomore Sigurd Riksfjord crossed to Drew who hit the ball far into the upper right corner of the goal past Oneonta keeper Jack Potter. Both teams would continue to battle back and forth on the rain-soaked field for the remainder of the half.
The Red Dragons had two key opportunities in the second half, including a shot by sophomore John McPhail, which bounced off the crossbar and was called out of bounds.
Adelphi junior Marlon McEachnie scored the insurance goal in the 83rd minute to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Adelphi outshot Oneonta 14-8 in an extremely physical contest that handed out 33 fouls and five cautions. Yatsenko collected two saves for his ninth career shutout and Potter had eight saves for Oneonta.
