Men's Soccer Falls Short Against Columbia, 3-2

Nov. 12, 2002

Box Score

New York, N.Y. - Columbia scored three unanswered goals from late in the first half to midway through the second in a 3-2 victory over Adelphi in a steady rain at Columbia Soccer Stadium.

The Light Blue found itself trailing early when Senior Anders Salomonsson knocked a low shot into the goal from just five yards out to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead at 11:56. Columbia goalkeeper Dean Arnaoutakis made the initial diving save on a shot by sophomore Jorrell Best, but the rebound went directly to the waiting Salomonsson.

The Lions out-shot Adelphi 11-4 in the first half, but would not get on the board until junior Tommy McMenemy drove a free kick from just past midfield to the edge of the 18-yard box. Senior Alejandro BerthT-Suarez collected the ball and hammered a volley into the right side of the net for the equalizer at 37:44.

Columbia gained focus and continued strong play into the second half. At 58:05, senior Michael Ching gave C.U. a 2-1 advantage when he knocked a McMenemy corner kick into the goal at the far post. Just over eight minutes later, senior Jon Mycroft notched what would prove to be the game winner. Senior David Duffy hit a cross to senior Craig Smart on the right side of the box. Smart one-touched the ball to the middle of the box for Mycroft, who drove a shot - also on a one-touch - into the goal at 66:18. It was Mycroft's fifth goal in the last four games; he has scored in each of those four contests.

The Panthers made the match interesting when Best headed the ball into the net with just 4:53 remaining on a pass by freshman Padraig Drew to make the score 3-2. However, the shot - Adelphi's ninth - would be its last of the game, as the 24th-ranked Lions improved to 9-5-1 with just one regular-season game left to play. Adelphi is 4-12-1.

Next up, Adelphi hosts Oneonta on Saturday, November 16 at 12:00 p.m. This marks the Panthers final game of the regular season.
