The Adelphi University women's soccer team advances to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament, defeating Bloomsburg, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Stiles Field. The Panthers improve to 16-1-2 on the season and face the #1 seed in the Northeast region, Lock Haven, on Sunday, November 17 at Lock Haven.
Adelphi jumped on the scoreboard within seconds of the start of the game. Junior Luciana Pace (Bellmore, N.Y.) slide the ball in from six yards out, picking up her 13th goal of the season. The Huskies missed a key opportunity on goal in the 10th minute of play as freshman Becky Ritter's (Philipsburg, Pa) shot ricocheted off the left side of the Adelphi goalpost.
Freshman Shannon McEntee (Valley Stream, N.Y.) picked up the second Panther goal, and the ultimate game-winner, with just under a minute remaining in the half. McEntee dribbled down the wing, beating three Bloomsburg defenders before shooting the ball to the top of the goal. Offensively, Adelphi dominated in the first half, outshooting Bloomsburg 15-6. At the end of the half, Adelphi led, 2-0.
The Huskies rallied back in the second half, outshooting the Panthers 14-4 in the second half. Bloomsburg tallied a goal in the 73rd minute on a cross from Ritter to senior Renee Williams (Larksville, Pa.) who slide the ball past Adelphi goalie Andrea Fasano (Syosset, N.Y.) Both teams continued to battled back and forth, as the Panthers defense held the Huskies to only one goal in the game.
Fasano notched a season-high 15 saves in the contest, giving up just one goal. Bloomsburg Heather Hartman (North Wales, Pa.) collected 11 saves with two goals against.
The Panthers are looking for a second chance against the Lock Haven (16-2-1). LHU shut out Adelphi, 2-0, in the Panthers only loss of the season on October 19. Kick off for Sunday's contest is slated for 1:30 p.m.
The winner of Sunday's contest will advance to the quarterfinals on November 23 or 24, with a location to be determined.
