The Adelphi University volleyball team dropped a conference match to visiting Mercy College, 28-30, 30-22, 28-30, 24-30, Monday night at Woodruff Hall. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 13-11 overall and 1-3 in the NYCAC. The Lady Flyers improve 8-13 overall and 4-2 in the NYCAC.
Freshman Alexandra Sedlik posted a career-high 15 kills and nine digs to lead Adelphi. Senior Mary Krines had 13 kills along with eight digs and four service aces. Senior Brianne MacArthur registered 37 assists for the Panthers.
Both teams battled back and forth in game one before Adelphi pulled ahead on a 5-0 run to take the lead, 13-9. Mercy responded on an 8-1 run, 17-14. A late rally by the Panthers pulled them to within two, but it was not enough for the win.
In game two, the Panthers made history, defeating the Lady Flyers 30-22. In the school's 11 year history, this is first-time ever Adelphi has won a game over Mercy, thereby forcing the fourth game.
Adelphi opened game three on a 6-1 run. Senior Cynthia Dainesi served for nine straight points helping Mercy to pull ahead. The Panthers would tie the score at 24-24, before the Lady Flyers surged ahead on a 5-0 run to win the game.
Sophomore Katiana Dorfleus notched a game-high 32 kills. Junior Emilly Stevens collected 23 digs for the Lady Flyers and senior Adreann Stevens registered 63 assists in the match.
Adelphi returns to conference action on Wednesday, October 9, traveling to Rockville Centre to face Molloy College at 7:00 p.m.
