Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. -
Adelphi held visiting St. Francis (N.Y.) College to just five shots on goal, but that was three more then the Terriers would need. St. Francis scored two goals, just two and a half minutes apart in the second half to secure a 2-0 win. With the loss Adelphi evens its record at 1-1, while the Terriers open the season 1-0.
The first ten minutes of the game were played mostly in Adelphi territory, as St. Francis had the wind advantage in the first half. In the first ten minutes the Terriers had two shots on goal, one of which required a diving stop by Adelphi goalie Michael Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.) to keep the game scoreless.
The Panthers recovered in the latter stages of the first half and managed to pull the St. Francis keeper off of his line twice. Once on a cross off of a free kick and again minutes later on a nice through ball, but Terrier Goalie Rosario Candela (Brooklyn, N.Y.) cleared both balls away.
Adelphi came out of halftime firing; just seven minutes into the second half Georgio Liasi (Larnaka, Cyprus) gave the Panthers their best scoring opportunity of the afternoon. Liasi intercepted a lazy Terrier pass and accelerated up the left flank towards the corner, where he centered the ball to a streaking Rob Philippou (Manhasset, N.Y.), who struck the ball over the bar.
In the 63rd minute of play St. Francis finally broke the Adelphi defense. Carlos Moncaleano (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) sent a Terrier free kick into the right side of the Adelphi box. Peter Ramirez (Holbrook, N.Y.) timed his jump just right and headed the ball past Hurley to give St. Francis a 1-0 advantage.
The Terrier's struck again just 2:24 later when St. Francis sent the ball into the Adelphi box. The ball deflected off of a Panther defender and ended up at the feet of Joseph John Baptiste, who beat Hurley with a well placed shot to the left side of the goal.
In the last 20 minutes of action Adelphi pushed up and put the pressure on St. Francis, producing a few more chances at goal, but the Panthers could not find the back of the Terrier net.
Hurley made three saves for Adelphi, while Candela collected two saves for St. Francis. Adelphi held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, all seven of which came in the second half.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, September 7 when they travel to South Orange, New Jersey to take on Seton Hall at 3:00 pm.
