Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. -
Two minutes into the second overtime Danny Attwell (Christchurch, New Zealand) collected a ball inside the Adelphi box turned and fired home the game winner, to give Fairfield a 2-1 overtime win against Adelphi. The loss drops the Panthers to 2-3 overall, while the Stags remain unbeaten at 3-0-2.
Adelphi controlled play for the first few minutes of the opening half but could not generate any quality opportunities. The latter part of the half belonged to Fairfield as the Stags put pressure on Adelphi. But freshman goalkeeper Rich Skoblicki (Patchogue, N.Y.) kept the game scoreless by flicking a dangerous Stag corner kick over the cross bar.
In the second half the game became much more up and down and the field opened up, giving both teams some strong rushes at goal. Adelphi broke through first when Tal Sheinfeld (Even Yehoda, Israel) struck a corner kick into the Fairfield box in the 66th minute. Sophomore Dieudonne Nonga (Jamaica, N.Y.) redirected the ball into the Stag net, giving Adelphi a 1-0 lead.
In the 76th minute of action Fairfield tied the score at one apiece when Mike Calabrese (Wyckoff, N.J.) sent a square ball to Billy Androutsos (Toronto, Ontario) who collected the ball on the Panther six and beat Skoblicki.
After failing to break through in the first overtime, Fairfield struck quickly in the second overtime period. Androutsos controlled the ball in the corner and sent it to Taylor Warwick (East Prairie Village, Kansas). Warwick collected the ball and passed it to Attwell who was in the Panther box. Attwell collected the ball, turned and put home the game winner.
Skoblicki kept the Panthers alive, making a career-high eight saves, Fairfield goalie Andrew Frankel (Warren, R.I.) collected three saves.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, September 29th when they travel to Stony Brook for a 7:00 pm show down.
