Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. -
Freshman Rob Philippou scored his first collegiate goal in the 85th minute of action to lift the Panthers to a 3-2 win over visiting St. Francis. With the win Adelphi evens their overall record at 2-2, while St. Francis drops to 2-3-1 on the season.
The first half started relatively quiet with St. Francis and Adelphi feeling each other out. But in the 22nd minute sophomore Ron Forman (Massapequa, N.Y.) moved toward the right side of the field with the ball before dropping it to a waiting Tal Sheinfeld (Even Yehoda, Israel). Sheinfeld collected the ball and chipped it over St. Francis goalie, Rosario Candela's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) head and into the upper right corner to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
St. Francis had one solid opportunity in the first half but it was called back due to offsides, allowing Adelphi to enter halftime leading 1-0.
The action heated up in the second half as St. Francis came out with energy and controlled the early action. In the 65th minute of play the Terriers put on a rush and slipped the ball into the Panther box. Adelphi goalie Rich Skoblicki (Patchogue, N.Y.) collected the ball at the same moment as a St. Francis attacker made a stab at it with his cleat. Skoblicki got the worst of the altercation and left the game, forcing the Panthers to replace him.
Just a minute after Skoblicki left the game Andreas Parpas (Larnaca, Cyprus) took a free kick from 30 yards out and beat Adelphi goalie, Peter Ruff (Bethpage, N.Y.) to tie the game at one apiece. After tying the game at one the Terriers kept the pressure on, winning a corner kick. Alessandro Acquista (Whitestone, N.Y.) took the corner for St. Francis and found the head of Marlon Bennett (Portmore, Jamaica), who flicked the ball into the back of the Panther net, giving the Terriers their first lead of the game, 2-1.
The next few minutes were back and forth until Sheinfeld collected a ball near the top of the St. Francis box and was fouled. Sheinfeld calmly struck the ball past Candela for his second goal of the game, knotting the score at two.
Emotions boiled over in the 77th minute as an altercation broke out which ultimately forced both teams to play a man down for the remainder of the game. The 10-on-10 action did not seem to bother the Panthers as they struck for the third and final time in the 85th minute.
Dieudonne Nonga (Jamaica, N.Y.) moved down the left flank with the ball uncovered, forcing Candela to leave his net and play the ball. Nonga then slipped the ball across the center of the Terrier box to a streaking Philippou who slotted the ball past a beaten Terrier defender and into the empty net, giving Adelphi a 3-2 victory.
Three Adelphi keepers saw action with Michael Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.) closing out the game. Skoblicki collected three saves, while Ruff collected one. Candela made seven saves for the Terriers.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, September 22nd when they play host to visiting Fairfield University at 2:00 pm on Stiles Field.
