Sophomore forward Kylee Hanavan (Thornton, Colo.) scored the game-winner with 39 seconds remaining as #2 Metro State edged #8 Adelphi University, 3-2, to win the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners improve to 25-1 while the Panthers finish the season 20-4-1.
Junior midfielder Marina MacDonald (Inverness, Scotland) opened the scoring for Metro State at 42:13 off a corner kick from sophomore forward Kylee Hanavan (Thornton, Colo.). The Roadrunners dominated the first half holding the Panthers scoreless after the first 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Panthers picked up the intensity. It finally paid off in the 74th minute as senior forward Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.) tied the contest. Metro State rallied back, pulling ahead, 2-1, on a penalty kick goal from senior midfielder Adrianne Almaraz (Bakersfield, Colo.) at 77:27. Coiro knotted the score again on a free kick at 85:59. Hanavan scored the game-winner for the Roadrunners off a cross after a rebound at 89:21.
On the contest, Metro State held a 20-10 shot advantage over Adelphi. The Roadrunners held a slight 13-12 advantage on corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had a solid game for the Panthers, collecting eight saves. Metro State had three stops in the match.
The Panthers wrap up its most successful season in program history. Rallying back from three losses during the regular season, Adelphi went on to capture the NYCAC Tournament and its third straight NCAA Northeast Regional title, beating top ranked Southampton and Franklin Pierce along the way.
Coiro, a two-time All-American, will finish her career as Adelphi's most prolific scorer. In three NCAA appearances, she has amassed 26 points, including 10 goals. Her overall career total stands at 77 goals and 27 assists for 181 points.
This was Adelphi first Final Four appearance since 1992 when they also advanced to the Championship game before falling to Barry University, 3-2.
