Garden City, N.Y. - Senior Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.) scored the game-winner in overtime as the Adelphi University women's soccer team defeated Southampton College to capture the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) Tournament Championship. The Panthers (17-3) handed the Colonials (17-1-2) their first loss of the season.

Both teams played a balanced first half. Southampton got on board first in the 19th minute as Denise Domena scored on a high kick from 20-yards out that sailed over the head and out of reach of Adelphi's Christine Conway. Most of the action took place in the midfield with Adelphi holding a slight 5-4 shot advantage over Southampton.

The contest began to heat up in the second half as tempers flared. In total, the teams combined for 28 fouls and four yellow cards in the game. The Panthers kept their composure and evened the game in the 78th minute. Sophomore Catherine Wyndham set up the play as junior Shannon McEntee (Valley Stream, N.Y.) blasted a shot from 20-yards out. Colonial goalie Corinne Morgan bobbled the ball as it rolled into the back of the net. Neither team was able to convert in the final minutes forcing the sudden death overtime.

The Colonials seemed to hold the initial advantage in overtime with two shots on goal in the opening minutes. Conway collected two of her three saves in the contest during this time to keep the Panthers in the game. Adelphi was in scoring position as McEntee slipped the ball to a waiting Coiro who was surrounded by several Southampton defenders. At 96:56, Coiro turned and shot from the top of the box sending the ball into the right corner for the victory.

The Panthers victory snapped a 17-game Colonial win streak and avenged and early season 3-0 loss at Southampton.

In addition to earning MVP honors, Coiro was named NYCAC Player of the year. She was also named a first-team All-NYCAC selection for the fourth consecutive time. A total of five Adelphi players received all-conference honors. McEntee and Wyndam were also named to the first-team. Seniors Josefa Pace (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Dina Cali (Valley Stream, N.Y.) each earned second-team All-NYCAC honors.
