Women's Soccer Slips Past West Chester, 2-1

Oct. 23, 2004

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - Senior Dina Cali (Valley Stream, N.Y.) scored in the 65th minute to lift Adelphi to a 2-1 regional win against visiting West Chester. The win raises Adelphi's season record to 12-3, while West Chester falls to 9-5-2 overall.

The Panthers came out hard and fast, scoring just 1:43 into play. Denise Auer (Holbrook, N.Y.) moved up the right flank with the ball and beat her defender, giving her a one-on-one with West Chester goalie Heather Rinker (Norristown, PA). Auer won this battle, slotting the ball in the lower right corner just out of Rinker's reach.

Adelphi's goal seemed to awaken the Golden Rams. West Chester took control of the action, finally getting on the board in the 17th minute. Kelly Ryan (Milford, PA) snuck the ball past Panther goalkeeper Christine Conway (Rockville Center, N.Y.) to knot the game at one.

West Chester continued to attack but the Panthers were able to weather the storm and head into halftime tied at one. The second half opened with Adelphi on the attack. The Panthers aggressive play paid off when Shannon McEntee (Valley Stream, N.Y.) moved the ball up the right side of the field and sent a cross into the West Chester box. Cali was waiting and able to settle the ball turn and fire a shot that ended up in the back of the net, giving Adelphi a 2-1 edge.

The Golden Rams did not give up and continued to play hard, making several strong pushes deep into Adelphi's half. The last coming just before the end of the game, when a West Chester attacker collected the ball in Adelphi penalty area and rifled the ball toward the Panther goal. Fortunately Conway was up to the task, making a diving stop to preserve Adelphi's 2-1 win.

Conway collected four saves in the win, as did West Chester's Rinker.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, October 27th when they play host to Southern New Hampshire at 3:00 pm on Stiles Field.
