Garden City, N.Y. -
Four different players scored to lift #4 Adelphi to a 4-1 win over #24 West Chester in the Northeast Regional Finals. With the win Adelphi improves to 18-1-1 on the year and will travel to face the winner of the New England Region next weekend. West Chester finished the year 12-6-3 overall.
"West Chester is a very athletic team and came at us very hard today, which made this a great team win and another step in the right direction," said Head Coach Rich Ilsley. "Our goal has always been to make the final four and now we are two steps closer to realizing that."
Adelphi opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Jennifer Garone (West Hempstead, N.Y.) collected an errant West Chester clear. Garone moved toward the Golden Ram goal, beat a defender and slipped the ball past West Chester's Ryan Levine (Stroudsburg, PA) to give the Panthers an early 1-0 advantage.
Three minutes later West Chester equaled the score at one. Kalyn Miller (Harleysville, PA) moved with the ball toward the Panther goal. Miller was able to chip a bouncing ball over the head of Adelphi keeper Andrea Fasano (Syosset, N.Y.) to knot the score at one. Miller's goal was the first goal scored on the Panthers in over 1,200 minutes of play.
Adelphi moved back on top in the 20th minute when Luciana Pace (Bellmore, N.Y.) found a streaking Marissa Cotilletta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and sent her the ball. Cotilletta collected the ball in stride and found herself behind the Golden Ram defense. Cotilletta slotted the ball past Levine to give Adelphi a 2-1 lead.
West Chester opened the first half strong and dominated much of the action in the first ten minutes. But in the 70th minute of play Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.) received a ball at the top right corner of West Chester's penalty box. Coiro turned and moved into the Golden Ram box where she was tripped from behind by a West Chester defender. Adelphi was awarded a penalty kick, which was taken by Monica Miller (Albuquerque, NM). Miller sent the ball past a diving Levine in to the bottom left corner of the net, giving the Panthers a 3-1 advantage.
Adelphi closed out the scoring in the 83rd minute when Coiro collected a long pass from Lena Dunning (Albuquerque, NM) and beat a West Chester defender at the top of the Golden Ram box. Coiro then sent a shot past Levine and in to the upper right corner of the net to give Adelphi a 4-1 lead with 16:50 left in the game.
With the win Adelphi has reached the Quarterfinals of the Division II NCAA Soccer Championships and will take on the winner of the New England Regional next weekend. Time and location to be determined, for updates log onto www.aupanthers.com.
