Garden City, N.Y. -
Adelphi played Atlantic Soccer Conference rival Florida International tough for 93 minutes and change. But 3:43 into overtime Fernando Plentz finally broke through the Panther defense and scored the game winning goal. The loss drops Adelphi to 8-5-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while Florida International improves to 2-0-1 in the ASC.
Most of the contest between Adelphi and Florida International was played between the eighteen's, with a total of just four shots taken in the first half. Action picked up in the second half with both teams attacking. Tom Cunningham kept Adelphi in the game by stopping a point blank blast from Florida International late in the second half. Golden Panther keeper Roy Rosenberg made an outstanding play to stop a well struck ball from Joe Afful and to push the follow by Sigurd Riksfjord wide.
It took Florida International less then 10 seconds to counter-attack and put home the game winner in overtime. Oscar Gil took the ball down the left flank and moved toward the Panther goal. Gil got to the six and then sent a ball across the mouth of the goal between two Adelphi defenders where it was banged home by Plentz to give Florida International the win.
Both Cunningham and Rosenberg collected six saves in the game. Adelphi returns to action Wednesday, October 29th when they play host to American at 2:30 pm.
