William “Dollar-Bill” Dabney, a product of Boys High School in Brooklyn, was a three-time high school All-American and two-time cross country champion when he arrived at Adelphi University in 1973. In fact, he still holds the sophomore New York State record at 1000-yards indoors in a time of 2:16.00 set in 1971. Dabney remains the most decorated 800-meter runner in Adelphi history.

A four-time All-American, Dabney was crowned an individual NCAA 800-meter champion in 1976. He crossed the line in a blazing time of 1:47.72 which would have placed him first in the 2004 NCAA Division II Championships by nearly three seconds. That year, he also participated in the Olympic Trials, was a member of the American Record Sprint Medley Relay Team and was the recipient of the Adelphi Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year award.

He held the Adelphi cross-country record at the time of his induction, a time of 24:58 at the 1975 NCAA Championships in Anaheim, California; he placed 15th in the five mile meet and earned All-American honors.

A recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. scholarship, he graduated in 1977 with a B.A. in political science.
