Kapatos had an outstanding career at the high school and collegiate level as both a player and coach. He began his playing career at Levittown Division High School, where he was a standout, All-American goalkeeper. After high school, Kapatos took his talents to Nassau Community College (NCC), where he continued to find both individual and team success. He helped NCC win the 1975 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship and was a two time All-American at Nassau.
In the fall of 1976 Kapatos transferred to the University of Maryland, where success again followed him. The Terrapins won an ACC title and an NCAA Division I semifinal appearances with a record of 8-2 in the spring of 1977.
Kapatos began his coaching career at SUNY Cortland as their defensive coordinator and goalkeeper coach from 1979-81. The Red Dragons went to the NCAA Division III National Championship game in both the 80 & 81 seasons.
Following his stint at Cortland, Kapatos returned to Long Island and was named the head coach at MacArthur High School in his native Levittown . The rookie Head Coach was named the Nassau County Coach of the Year in 1982.
Following his stint at MacArthur HS, Kapatos was named the Head Coach at Holy Trinity High School. He had a 24-12 record over three seasons leading the school to consecutive NSCLL finals.
Following his stay at Holy Trinity, Kapatos joined the Panthers coaching staff in 1992 as the assistant coach, and his primary responsibility was working with the defense. His guidance was a key factor in the defense that led the Adelphi to the 1993 NCAA Division II National Championship.
In 1994 Kapatos was elevated to Head Coach at Adelphi, becoming the fifth head coach in program history. He would stalk the sidelines as head coach during the next 14 years, compiling an overall record of 115-58, including capturing four NCAA Division II National Titles (1995, 1998, 1999, 2001). Kapatos also won four East Coast Conference regular season crowns and coached 61 All-Americans and four NCAA Player of the Year award winners.
Outside Adelphi, Kapatos was president and owner of The Long Island Summer Lacrosse League, a thriving camp for over 800 participants at multiple sites on Long Island. In the spring of 2008 he was inducted into the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Kapatos is currently the Director of Auxiliary Services and Head Boy’s Lacrosse Coach at Ravenscroft School, where he was named the US Lacrosse Boys Coach of the Year for North Carolina private schools in 2012.
