Jeff Tyler began his athletic career in Levittown, New York at MacArthur High School. He certainly left his mark on Nassau County, earning four straight varsity letters and inclusion on the All-County team in 1993 and 1994, while also being named league MVP. In addition, he was honored with the Diamond Award as a senior, which goes to Nassau’s best hurler.

MacArthur also found team success with Tyler on the mound, becoming the first Long Island school to win a New York State title, with a spotless 29-0 record in 1994. Upon graduation from High School, Tyler matriculated at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He spent two years as a member of the Cardinals pitching staff, including the 1995 season, helping Lamar to a record of 38-24 and a Sun Belt Conference Championship.

Tyler left Texas after his sophomore season and enrolled at Adelphi University, making an immediate impact in Garden City. In his first appearance in a Panther Uniform, Tyler tossed five scoreless innings against Bluefield State, striking out four and collecting the victory. He amassed a regular season record of 9-0, with an earned run average of just 1.07 and 38 strikeouts.

He was even better in the post season, pitching Adelphi to two of their three wins in the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional. He tossed a complete game, 5-4 win in their opening round victory against Concordia and came back two days later to throw a perfect 10th inning of relief to help the Brown and Gold past host, UMass-Lowell, 9-8, sending Adelphi to the College World Series.
At the College World Series, Tyler and the Panthers out hit Ashland, 18-15 to advance to the second round, but dropped consecutive games to Cal State – Chico, 11-3 and Virginia State, 11-9, ending the season with an impressive 32-7 record.

Tyler’s dominance on the mound was recognized, he was awarded the highest honor a collegiate player can receive, America Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) second-team All-America status. At the time, he was one of just nine players in program history to be named All-American.

The New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC), Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) all recognized Tyler after the 1999 season. He was named first-team All-NYCAC, while the NCBWA honored him with inclusion on the All-America team and as the Division II Pitcher of the Year. The ECAC made Tyler an All-Star and the ABCA included him on their All-Northeast Region squad.

Tyler’s historic season left his mark on the Adelphi record books as well. He is currently the school record holder for wins in a season with 12, third in single season complete games at nine and sixth in both shut outs (2) and earned run average (1.50). Tyler is also among the top-10 in single season innings pitched with 84.
