A product out of Flushing High School in Flushing, New York, Howard Gulker attended Adelphi University in 1960. During his first year, he played on the freshman basketball team for the first season. After that, Gulker and his 6’4” stature would make his mark in the Adelphi history books as one of the top players to put on a Panther uniform which is showed through his numerous appearances in the school record books in categories ranging from scoring to field goals to rebounding.
In his three varsity seasons, Gulker helped his team to a 42-32 record under the direction of legendary coach George Faherty. Aside from becoming the fourth elite member of the 1,000 point club, he helped his team to the school’s (then) third NCAA appearance where the squad ventured all the way to the Elite Eight by beating the likes of Springfield and Northeastern before falling to the Aggies of North Carolina A&T. At the time, the showing was the best Adelphi had seen; to date, only two other teams have made it as far (’01 & ’02).
Along with winning the AALIC Championship during his second year, he also set the sophomore scoring record and followed up with the same feat his junior year. The record books are familiar with Gulker’s name as he appears in it eleven times. For single season records, he ranks #8 in scoring with 544 points, #9 in scoring average with 20.1 points per game, #2 in field goals with 231, #1 in field goal attempts with 499, #3 and #4 in rebounds with 355 and 306 respectively and #4 in rebounding average with 13.148 rebounds per game.
Additionally, his career statistics add up and place him in the top of four categories; #19 in points with 1,201, #8 in field goal attempts with 1,166, #4 in rebounds with 855 and #3 in rebound average with 11.4. Lastly, Gulker set the single game record for most rebounds on December 27, 1962 with 27 boards, a record that stands to date.
