The recipient of Adelphi’s President’s Award of Merit, George Faherty served Adelphi with distinction from 1951–1966, elevating the caliber of the athletic program and earning the respect and devotion of athletes and colleagues. Under his leadership, Adelphi teams played in five National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) postseason tournaments, won the prestigious Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award three times, and were selected as number one in the East by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). These accomplishments were followed by the success of the Adelphi Basketball Coaching School. Co-founded and directed by Faherty, the Coaching School had a roster of more than 100 outstanding lecturers that reads like a who’s who of coaches.
While a coach at Adelphi, Faherty posted a 210-161 record in his 16 years of guidance. His mark of 210 wins still stands as a Cager best. His mark of 22 wins in a single season also stood as a best for 49 years.
During his tenure at Adelphi, Faherty also served as the first president of the Tri-State League, played a key role in the formation of the Athletic Association of Long Island Colleges, and was elected president of the Metropolitan Collegiate Athletic Directors Association.
