Francis “Fran” McCall was a two-sport athlete during his time at Adelphi. The native of Brooklyn, New York majored in Physical Education was a star on the football field as well as a major part of the young lacrosse team under the direction of Claude Ruggian. Aside from being a player, he was also a coach, filling in the assistant coach position in 1971 and 1972. His athletic accomplishments did not go unnoticed as he received the Outstanding Senior Athlete Award during his final athletic year. Off the field, he was the President of Omicron Pi.
The Panther alum, after his career at Adelphi went on to join the coaching staff at St. John’s University in Flushing, New York. After he passed away, in his honor, the Fran McCall Memorial Trophy was created in his name and was given to the winner of the annual Adelphi-St. John’s lacrosse game. The Panthers have won nine out of eleven meetings with the Red Storm.
