As a talented infielder for the Panthers, Spruce helped her softball team to a 132-59-2 record in her four years from 1985-88. Spruce lead the Panthers to three NCAA Division I Regional titles and two appearances at the NCAA Division I World Series.
A 1988 graduate from Adelphi, she was among the leaders in numerous records during her playing days for the Panthers, including career games played (191), at bats (611), runs (86), hits (165), RBI (67) and stolen bases (27). Spruce earned All-Northeast Region accolades in 1986 and again in 1988 when she led the Panthers to the finals of the College World Series.
