Retiring in 1966 after forty years of service to Adelphi University, Dr. Chester Barrows is one of the Hall of Fame’s most distinguished non-athletic recipients. During his time at Adelphi, Barrows saw the college move from a building in Brooklyn, New York and 600 students, to a thriving campus in 1966 at its current home in Garden City, New York.

A native of Massachusetts, Barrows began his career at Adelphi after serving in France in World War I. Because of the War, Barrows was forced to split his education between Dartmouth College and The University of Edinborough in Scotland. When he returned to the United States, he completed his work at Boston University.

He joined the faculty in 1925 and when Dr. Paul Dawson Eddy was named president of the university, Eddy’s first task was to name Barrows departmental chairman and to increase the enrollment of the college. Barrows continued his work as a professor and also wrote many books during his lifetime, including Fifty Years of Adelphi College. He was also a member of the Athletic Council and a member of the original Hall of Fame selection committee.
