Gatti was one of the most-decorated players in Adelphi Baseball history. Exhibiting his skill on the field, the star outfielder was a three-time All-American, but showing his dedication in the classroom, he was also a three-time Academic All-American.
In 1993, his senior year, Gatti recorded a .468 batting average with 88 hits in 49 games, including 10 doubles, two triples and nine home runs. He also led the team with 31 stolen bases. Following the season, Gatti was chosen by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) as the Division II Player of the year. He led the Panthers to a 31-17 overall record and several championships, including the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the NCAA Northeast Region.
After winning the Northeast Regional, the team traveled to compete in the College World Series in Montgomery, Alabama, earning a third-place national finish. For his Adelphi career, Gatti batted .444 with 278 hits, 183 runs, 164 RBI and 104 stolen bases. He was chosen as Adelphi’s 1992-93 “Athlete of the Year.”
In addition to his All-American honors, Gatti’s other awards include a three-time All-Northeast region selection, three-time Academic All-District team, ECAC South Player of the Year, three-time ECAC South All-Star and an All-Knickerbocker selection.
Gatti was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 1993 MLB June Amateur Draft. After three seasons in the Rangers organization, Gatti returned to Adelphi to earn his Master’s Degree in physical education in 1997 and is currently teaching in the North Shore School District.
