On October 18, 1968, Beamon accomplished one of the greatest feats in sporting history. During the Mexico City Olympic Games of the year, Beamon shattered the world record in the long jump by leaping an incredible 29 feet, 2.5 inches. Beamon’s jump broke the old world record by nearly two feet. In the 1968 games, he would scratch twice in the preliminary rounds, before jumping 26 feet, 10.5 inches to qualify for the finals. He would set the world record on the very next jump. Beamon was named 1968 “Track and Field Athlete of the Year”, by Track and Field News magazine and won every outdoor meet in which he competed in the 1968 season.
Beamon is a 1972 graduate of Adelphi University receiving his bachelor’s degree in sociology and was a member of the men’s basketball and track teams.
