Al began his coaching career at Adelphi as a baseball coach as well as the linebacker coach from 1950 to 1951.  In 1963, Al was named “Coach of the Year” by the Associated Press, United Press, Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, and his fellow coaches.  He has since been named both “Executive of the Year” and “Owner of the Year.”  In 1966, he was named the American Football League commissioner and signed several NFL top players AFL contracts.   
 
In May 1991, Al Davis became the first recipient of the NFL Players Association’s Retired Players Award of Excellence “…for his contributions to the men who played the game.”  Al is the President and owner of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders.  Al’s most prestigious honor is that of having been chosen by eight pro football Hall of Fame inductees to present them at the Canton, Ohio induction ceremony.  The players are Lance Alworth, Jim Otto, George Blanda, Willie Brown, Gene Upshaw, Fred Biletnikoff, Art Shell, and Ted Hendricks.
