Mary Moore Named Head Field Hockey Coach

Garden City, N.Y. -- After a nationwide search, Mary Moore has been tabbed the next head coach of the Adelphi University field hockey team, after spending the 2016 season as an assistant.

Moore succeeds the retired Gloria O'Connor as the second head coach of the program since its return to campus in 2008, and is the 15th head coach of the program all-time.

"I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to step into the head coach position here at Adelphi University after serving as assistant coach for the 2016 season," Moore said. "I would like to thank Athletic Director Danny McCabe and the entire search committee for seeing the potential in this program and trusting me with the job of taking it to the next level in terms of overall skill development and intensity.

"I would also like to thank Gloria O'Connor for taking the first step in bringing me onto the staff and trusting my vision in the development of our current players and believing in the future of this program under my guidance. I look forward to building and further cultivating the tradition of what Adelphi University field hockey has become under her leadership, both on the field and in the classroom."

A Miller Place, N.Y. native, Moore played four years of Division I field hockey at the Central Michigan University from 2011-14, culminating in All-MAC Second Team, All-MAC Tournament Team and Academic All-MAC selection as a senior. Over the course of her Chippewa career, Moore helped the team to its first regular-season MAC title in 13 years, played in 74 games in the midfield and was the team's leading scorer in her junior season in 2013, when she led the conference in game-winning goals. Culminating her career as a senior captain, she was Central Michigan's Player of the Year in 2014.

Prior to her collegiate playing days, Moore was a 2010 Empire State team selection at Miller Place High School in Suffolk County. A decorated high school product, she was a two-time All State and three-time All-County pick and a two-time Top 10 scorer on Long Island.

"We are thrilled to have Mary Moore move into the role of head coach for our field hockey program," said McCabe. "She did a wonderful job for us as an assistant coach this past year and it's great to have her leading our program. Mary has a tremendous passion for the sport, Adelphi University, and this team, and that was very evident in all of our conversations with her during the search process. We are looking forward to assisting Mary to carry out her vision for the program."

In 2016, the field hockey team finished 13-6 overall and made its fifth straight appearance in the Northeast 10 Conference tournament. The Brown and Gold missed the NCAA tournament in the postseason, having reached the stage in 2014 and 2015.
