Student-Athletes Celebrated At Banquet On Monday

Garden City, N.Y. - This past Monday evening, the Adelphi University athletic department held its annual Student-Athlete Banquet to honor the successes of the individuals and teams that represent the Panthers throughout the year in competition, as well as in the classroom and in the community.

Held on campus in the University Center ballroom, all of the Brown and Gold teams and coaches gathered for the dinner and awards ceremony. Included in the program was the presentation of team MVPs as well as honoriong each program's seniors. The night was capped off with a highlight video, demonstrating the on-field success of Adelphi.

The night begin with the evening's emcee Kevin Dexter welcoming the crowd and introducing Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation Danny McCabe for a brief speech followed by a few words from Adelphi President Dr. Christine M. Riordan. Giving the "Senior Speech" this year was Shelby Stoner of the women's volleyball team, as she spoke about her transition from growing up in Alaska and the opportunities she was given by attending Adelphi and becoming a Panther. Prior to dinner being served, SAAC Advisor Gordon Purdie spoke about the success and future of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Following dinner, the seniors and MVPs of each team were honored, followed by the Z. Paul Aiken Award. The Aiken Award is presented to male and female junior student-athletes that combine excellence in the classroom and on the fields of play. The award this year was presented to Mandy Stanislovaitis of the women's volleyball team and Robert Vani of the baseball team. Following the individual awards, the Team Academic Award was presented to the softball program for achieving the highest GPA from the spring and fall semesters of the 2015 calendar year.

This year's Female Scholar Athlete Award, recognizing the outstanding academic and athletic achievements of an individual, was presented to Taylor Groth of the women's soccer team. Men's basketball sophomore Michael Coffey and senior John English of the men's lacrosse team shared this year's Male Sholar Athlete of the Year award.

Concluding the evening's award distribution was Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Two winners were selected for each award as Anthony Libroia from men's basketball and men's lacrosse senior Salvatore Tuttle shared the male award while Taylor Hayes of women's lacrosse and Megan Manierski from women's volleyball garnered the female recoginition.

To cap off the evening, a video showcasing highlights from the past 2015-16 academic year was shown to the audience.
