The Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics hosted its 14th Black History Month Celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 9, honoring the achievements of African-American student-athletes and alumni. Over 100 people gathered in the Campbell Lounge in the Center for Recreation and Sport to celebrate and listen to keynote speaker, Curtis O. Minnis '77, Managing Director of Global Sales for The Fedex Corporation."On behalf of Adelphi athletics I'd like to thank Curtis for supporting the event and for speaking to our student-athletes," Adelphi University Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation
Danny McCabe said. "The wisdom and advice he shared with our current student-athletes made the event a tremendous learning experience not only for them but for all of us associated with Adelphi athletics."
Master of ceremonies, Kevin Dexter kicked off the evening, and a warm welcome was given by Mr. McCabe. The Cecil K. Watkins award, which is given annually to a male and female student-athlete of color who excels in the classroom and on the playing field, was presented. Women's soccer student-athlete Laura Gomez and men's basketball player Justin Jenkins were recipients of the award, which is named after Adelphi University alumnus and Hall of Famer Cecil K. Watkins.
The Black History Month Celebration was founded in 2002 by former Assistant Athletic Director Suzette McQueen and has been held annually during the month of February since its inception.
