Garden City, NY - This past Monday evening, the Adelphi University athletic department held its Student-Athlete Banquet to honor the success of the individuals and teams that represent the Panthers throughout the year in competition as well as in the classroom and in the community.
Held on campus in the University Center ballroom, all of the Brown and Gold teams and coaches gathered for the dinner and award ceremony. Included in the program was the presentation of team MVPs as well as honoriong each program's seniors. The night was capped off with a highlight video, demonstrating the on-field success of Adelphi.
The night begin with the evening's emcee Kevin Dexter welcoming the crowd and introducing Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation
Danny McCabe for a brief speech followed by a few words from Adelphi President Dr. Scott. Giving the "Senior Speech" this year was
Jordan Hibbert of the men's soccer team as he spoke about his transition from growing up in Canada and the opportunities he was given by attending Adelphi and becoming a Panther. Prior to dinner, SAAC Advisor
Gordon Purdie spoke about the success and future of the student-athlete advisory committee.
Following dinner, the seniors and MVPs of each team were honored followed by the Z. Paul Aiken Award. The Aiken award is presented to male and female junior student-athletes that combine excellence in the classroom and on the fields of play. The award this year was presented to
Molly Cuevas of the field hockey team and men's lacrosse junior
John English. Following the individual awards, the Team Academic Award was presented to the softball program for achieving the highest GPA from both semesters among all Panther teams.
This year's Female Scholar Athlete Award, recognizing the outstanding academic and athletic achievements of an individual, was presented to
Kelly Mannix of the women's basketball team. Baseball sophomore
Robert Vani and
Juan Aguiar of the men's soccer team shared this year's Male Sholar Athlete of the Year award. Concluding the evening's award distribution was Male and Female Athletes of the Year as
Nick Filippazzo, member of both the cross country and track field program, and
Salvatore Tuttle of men's lacrosse shared the Male Athlete of the Year while women's volleyball senior
Kaitlyn DeStefano was chosen as the female winner.
To cap off the evening, a highlight video created by Sports Information Graduate Assistant
