Armas To Join New York Red Bulls Staff

Chris Armas has been at the helm of the women's soccer team for the last four seasons.

Garden City, NY Chris Armas will be stepping down as Adelphi University Head Women's Soccer Coach effective Friday, March 6, as announced by Director of Athletics Danny McCabe. Armas has resigned his position to accept an assistant coach position on the staff of Major League Soccer's (MLS) New York Red Bulls.

"Chris has done a tremendous job over the past four seasons with our women's program," McCabe stated. "Not only has he honored our storied tradition by guiding the team back to the NCAA Tournament, but he has also produced outstanding students and people. On behalf of myself and the Adelphi Athletics family, we wish Chris the best of luck."

Armas was named the sixth coach in program history in July 2011 and finishes with a 47-23-10 record throughout four seasons at the helm, including a 14-5-2 mark this past season. The Brown and Gold also rose as high as ninth in the NSCAA Poll after a 5-0 start to 2014 after reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2013 following back-to-back Northeast-10 Championships Final appearances.

"I've had an amazing experience in my four years coaching and mentoring the student-athletes of the Adelphi women's soccer team.  In a situation where I was supposed to be the teacher, the girls have been the ones who have given and taught me. I cannot say enough positives about the team but they have changed my life forever," said Armas.

"There are so many to thank but I'd like to acknowledge Mr. Hartwell, Dr. Scott, Danny McCabe, and Mr. Proto for the privilege and opportunity they've given me and my family," Armas continued. "A special thanks to my coaching staff for the incredible job they have done with the team and for the loyalty to the program they have showed. Lastly, to the entire athletic department family, thank you for welcoming me in four years ago and for the genuine friendship and camaraderie you've shared with me. I will always be proud to be a Panther!"

The Red Bulls are scheduled to begin the 2015 season on Sunday, March 8 in Kansas City. The home-opener is scheduled for Sunday, March 22 at Red Bull Arena. Armas joins the Red Bulls coaching staff under Head Coach Jesse Marsch. Overseeing the Red Bulls Player Development System is former Adelphi men's soccer coach Robert Montgomery. Montgomery led the Panthers for 29 seasons that included seven NCAA Tournament appearances and a 258-223-39 record.

A 1994 graduate of Adelphi, Armas was a two-time All-Academic selection during his time in Garden City and a two-time All-New York state selection. During his senior season he led the Panthers in scoring with 17 points and was an All-America selection. Armas also helped Adelphi to three straight NCAA Division I Tournament appearances.

An integral member of the 1995 U.S. Interregional Soccer League champion, Long Island Rough Riders, Armas went on to become a perennial MLS All-Star for the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Chicago Fire. He was named a member of the MLS Best XI five times and played in the MLS Cup four times, winning the trophy with the Fire in its expansion season in 1998.

A native of Brentwood, New York, Armas made 66 appearances for the U.S. National Team, retiring from competition after the 2007 MLS season to become a Fire assistant coach, before returning to Long Island to coach youth soccer in 2009.
