Garden City, N.Y. – Adelphi University held its annual end of the year Athletic Banquet on Tuesday, May 1, and recognized dozens of athletes for their outstanding achievements. Most Valuable Player awards were given to a member of each of 24 varsity squads, while a handful of Memorial awards and major athletic acheivement awards were presented to Adelphi's most accomplished student-athletes.
Seniors
Mychael Fabio (track and field) and Erica DeVito (women's lacrosse) were named Adelphi's Outstanding Athletes of the Year for their record-breaking seasons.
Fabio closed out his final year of track and field in tremendous fashion. During the indoor season, he set new personal bests in both the 200 and 400 meter dashes with times of 21.47 and 47.26 respectively. The mark in the 200m breaks his existing school record and was an NCAA provisional qualifier while his 400m time broke the 35 year old school record and was also automatic qualifier. He also became the first Panther ever to compete at the Indoor USATF National Championships in Albuquerque, NM. At the NE-10 Championships, he placed first in the 500m dash in a new Championship record time and also finished second in the 200m. At the NCAA meet, he went on to place ninth in the 400m. For his efforts during the indoor season, he earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors in both events.
During the outdoor season, Fabio was a double event winner at the Northeast-10 Championships, taking the individual crowns in the 200 Meters and 400 Meters. In the 400m, he clocked in at 46.69 for a new personal best which also was an NCAA provisional mark, ranking him fifth fastest in Division II. He also helped Adelphi finish fourth in the 4x100 Relay and second in the 4x400 Relay to score 23.25 of Adelphi's 76 total team points. He was named the Northeast-10 Track and Field Most Valuable Performer of the meet. His appearance in the NCAA Championships marks the fifth and final time he will have participated in the meet in his four year career.
A four-time All-American and three-time National Champion as a member of the women's lacrosse team, DeVito helped the Panthers to their third straight Northeast-10 Tournament Title and led the team in goals (63), assists (39) and points (102). Earlier this year, she was named a Northeast-10 First-Team All-Conference selection, an IWLCA First-Team All-Region honoree, and a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District award winner. She surpassed former Panther Rachel Ray as the program's all-time leader in career points with 379 as well as moving ahead of Hall of Famer Katherine Hock as the all-time goals leader with 270.
Joe Vitale of men's lacrosse and Lauren Lucas of women's soccer received Senior Male and Female Athlete of the Year honors, respectively. Vitale earned his second straight First-Team All-American nod behind a 66 point season on 39 goals and 27 assists, and landed on the Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team while leading the Panthers to the NE-10 Semifinals. Lucas started all 16 games for the women's soccer team and played lockdown defense for a squad that allowed just 22 goals on the season, earning her a spot of the NE-10 All-Conference Second Team and NE-10 Academic All-Conference Team.
The Junior Athlete of the Year awards went to Chelsea Overholt of volleyball and Andrew Coelho of cross country. Overholt, an AVCA All-Region honoree and a second-team All-Northeast-10 award winner, led the Panthers in kills with 249 and was third in digs with 215. She was also a Northeast-10 All-Tournament selection and had 21 service aces and 29 blocks to lead Adelphi to a NE-10 Tournament Championship and trip to the NCAA East Region Semifinals.
Lacrosse swept the Sophomore Athlete of the Year awards, with Greg Puskuldjian taking home the male award and Devan Crimi earning the female accolade. Puskuldjian was one of five men's lacrosse All-Americans in 2012 with an Honorable Mention nod, posting a .707 faceoff percentage and winning 145 of 205 face offs. Additionally, he added six goals and five assists and led the team in ground balls with 79. Crimi played her way on the IWLCA All-Region Second-Team and NE-10 All-Conference First Team. She finished second on the team in points and assists with 21 and 71, respectively, while ranking third on the team with 50 goals. She was 7-for-10 on free position shots, scooped up 23 ground balls, took 11 draw controls and caused 11 turnovers.
Rookies Samantha Whitney (women's soccer) and Louis Kelly (Golf) snagged the Freshman Athlete of the Year awards for excelling during their first year wearing Brown and Gold. Whitney, Adelphi's first-year goalie and NE-10 All-Rookie Team selection, posted a 7-7 record between the pipes, stopped 74 attempts, and let up just 19 goals for a 1.24 goals against average. Kelly made an immediate impact on the links this year, winning the 2011 NE-10 Individual Championship while helping the Panthers to a third-place finish. As a part of the third most-impactful Division II freshman class according to GolfStat.com, Kelly earned a fifth-place finish at the 2012 PGA Minority Collegiate Championship with rounds of 76 and 74.
Finally, the Director of Athletics Recognition Awards were presented to Andreas Hammar of men's tennis and Jeanette Heimerle of field hockey. Hammar reeled in the 2012 NE-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Year title and was named NE-10 First Team All-Conference at number one singles as he recorded a perfect mark during the Northeast-10 regular season, going 11-0 at the top flight. He finished the season with a record of 16-5 overall and 12-0 in conference play, including his win in the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Championship First Round match. Heimerle appeared on the NE-10 All-Conference First Team for the second straight season after leading the Panthers with nine goals, nine assists and 27 points in 2011. Her outstanding career places her first in the nation among active players with 43 assists, which ties for fifth all-time in Division II. A 2010 All-American, Heimerle had a team-best three game-winning goals this season and ranked seventh and 10th in the NE-10 in assists and points, respectively.
