Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey and women's basketball programs are teaming up to collect gently used prom dresses, bridesmaid's dresses and accessories, including dressy shoes, bags and costume jewelry, for the 18th annual Long Island Volunteer Center Prom Botique.

All collected items will be donated and distributed free of charge to girls of families across Long Island who cannot easily absorb the expense of a new gown for their prom, awards ceremony, or graduation event. Donations can be made at the front desk of the office of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday, April 9, to Friday, April 13.

According to the Long Island Volunteer Center website, over 1,300 girls benefited from 65 different schools and nonprofit youth organizations across Long Island benefited from last year's event. Created in 1992 to improve the quality of life for all Long Islanders, the Long Island Volunteer Center is a nonprofit organization that encourages people to engage in service to their communities and mobilizes volunteers and donations to support community service initiatives.
