Adelphi Celebrates Black History Month Friday, Event at Capacity

This is the 10th year that Adelphi and the Athletic Department have held a Black History Month Celebration.

Adelphi will celebrate Black History Month Friday.
Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics  will host is 10th Annual Black History Month Celebration, on Friday, February 10, 2012. This year's event will feature key note speaker Billy Mitchell, ambassador for the Apollo Theater. It is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Campbell Lounge in the Center for Recreation and Sports and is currently at capacity.

Carlyshia Hurdle '06, an Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at LIU-C.W. Post will be the guest speaker. Hurdle was a four year member of the Adelphi women's basketball team, earning MET Writer's Association Player of The Year honors in 2006 and going on to a professional basketball career.

Voices of Virtue, Inc., a community based choir and non-profit organization will provide the entertainment. Voices of Virtue has traveled the world, sharing their talents and competing in places such as Prague, Verona and Austria.

The event, which consists of a buffet dinner, is currently at capacity. Over the years, with the assistance of the Multicultural Alumni Chapter, it has attracted many alumni back to campus, many who had lost touch with the university.

The keynote speakers have included former Adelphi Dean of Athletics and Head Track Coach Ron Bazil, Congressman Gregory Meeks '75, author Patricia Elam '76, and Board of Trustees Kenneth Banks '74, Dr. N. Gerry House, attorney/author Alicia M. Crowe, NCAA VP for Diversity & Inclusion, Charlotte Westerhaus, ECAC Commissioner Rudy Keeling and most recently Ret. Brig. General Sheila Baxter.
