Softball Holds Clinic To Raise Money, Awareness of Breast Cancer

Oct. 20, 2010

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team hosted a free "At Bat for a Cause" clinic on Sunday, October 10 as part of the Adelphi Athletic Departments "Think Pink" campaign. All proceeds and donations accepted at the event went to benefit the New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

Over 60 kids, ages 5-15, showed up at Adelphi's temporary home field at the Garden City Pool for instruction on everything from hitting and pitching to fielding. The clinic was free of charge, lasting from 9am to 12pm, and anyone making a donation received a t-shirt and over $800 was raised.

"The Mineola Athletic Association had about 25 girls at the "At Bat For A Cause" clinic and everyone loved it," said parent Liz Nygaard "We were all very impressed with the maturity level of your team, they all seemed to have so much fun while teaching the girls."

The main purpose of the clinic was to demonstrate softball as a lifetime sport in order to increase the overall health and confidence of the young ladies. The drills were focused on improving the fundamentals of the game and always worked into some sort of competition.

During the month of October, the fall sports teams hosted "Pink" games and the department sold t-shirts and other raffle items to raise money for the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

The Panthers have created a team goal to raise over $1,000 and are still selling t-shirts and other items through the softball office, for information please contact Head Coach Paige Smith.
