Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University baseball team and Hank's Yanks played a charity exhibition game on Sunday, October 17 on William J. Bonomo Field. A few Yankee greats were in attendance to support the game and the cause on what turned out to be a beautiful day of baseball and raising awareness of the juvenile diabetes.
"It's a great day to play baseball and to be playing in support of such a worthy cause, in front of a great crowd," Adelphi head coach Dom Scala stated. "I just enjoy the game of baseball and to give these kids an opportunity to see such a great campus, and a great field and then to have it be in support of a fantastic cause with Willie Randolph and Micky Rivers here as well is amazing. It's always to have the support of the Yankee family."
Adelphi University President, Dr. Robert A. Scott and Yankee greats Willie Randolph and Micky Rivers threw out the first pitch and said a few words to the crowd on hand. Adelphi and Yankee supporter Adele Smithers was also on hand and honored as were Roberto Clemete, Jr., Cesar Prescott and Hank's Yanks manager senior advisor Ray Negron.
With a crowd of well over 100 people in attendance the event did an outstanding job of raising money and awareness of juvenile diabetes, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF). JDRF is the worldwide leader in funding research to cure type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly and lasts a lifetime. JDRF sets the global agenda for diabetes research and is the largest charitable funder of and advocate for diabetes science worldwide.
"JDF is near and dear to my heart because my two middle children, Chantre and Andre were diagnosed when they were seven and nine,so this cause is close to my heart" Randolph explained. "We've worked with them to help find a cure and will continue to do so. So to get a chance to come out and support Ray (Negron) and Dom (Scala) on such a great day and for such a great cause is special."
