Men's Lacrosse Gives Back, Helps Clean Up Effort in Rockville Centre

Jan. 19, 2010

Garden City, N.Y. - Continuing their community outreach efforts, the Adelphi men's lacrosse team traveled to Tanglewood Preserve in Rockville Centre on Monday, January 18 to celebrate the Martin Luther King Day of Service. Members of the coaching staff and the team helped clean-up the grounds of the Tanglewood Preserve, along with Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy.

Following the event, head coach Gordon Purdie reflected on the days events, "Each day these student athletes hit the field to be the best team we can be, today I feel our efforts off the field truly indicate who we are as a team. While we all have a common bond in the sport of lacrosse, it is events like these that help us better understand the true importance of lending a helping hand to others in need."

In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the King Holiday as a national day of volunteer service. Instead of a day off from work or school, Congress asked Americans of all backgrounds and ages to celebrate Dr. King's legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action.

As part of the day's events, the squad members along with the Long Island community took part in the restoration of the preserve by working in tandem to rake, sweep and beautify the Center for Science Teaching and Learning.
