Goggles, whistles, shoe strings and singlets all sound like athletic equipment, but how about when they are adhered to a size 36 B bra? Well, the Panthers are about to mix art with athletics as they participate in the Adelphi Breast Cancer Creative CupsTM initiative.

The athletic teams forged a relationship with the hotline in 2007 when they began the Jennifer Montgomery Breast Cancer Awareness event. It seemed a natural transition to also lend their support to Creative CupsTM is a thought-provoking art exhibition fundraising event to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

This life-affirming celebration will feature bras that are transformed by their creators into works of art. Creative CupsTM celebrates the lives of those living with breast cancer and those we have lost to this terrible disease. The auction/gala celebration will be held on March 19, 2009, at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY.

Several of the teams, including women's soccer, men's lacrosse, cross-country/track, volleyball, women's basketball and the athletic department staff, have all signed on to design bras. "The teams, especially the men, were a little leery at first about working with bras, but once they realized what was required, they really got into it," Suzette McQueen, assistant athletic director said. "We have seen some great ideas from the student-athletes."

The athletic department plans to present all of its creations to the the hotline at the end of October.
