Garden City, N.Y. -
On March 6 the Adelphi University CHAMPS program made a visit to the Salvation Army of Hempstead, New York to drop off donated items collected on campus beginning in October 2007 through March 1 of this year.
The student-athletes set up collection bins across campus and in the Woodruff Hall lobby during the home basketball games. Each athletic team was also asked to sponsor a home baskeball game and asked to bring one toiletry item per member of their team to that particular game.
The Salvation Army is always in need of toiletry items, also known as "luxury items, as they are not covered by government assistance. Donations included toiletry items such as shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste as well as paper products like paper towels, toilet paper and baby wipes.
CHAMPS members Lauren Flanagan, Anna Gabbard, Alex Molotsky, Tomasz Walczak and Amanda Popoli as well as Assistant AD Suzette McQueen delivered six boxes to Carol Smith of the Salvation Army.
This is the second year that the toiletries drive has taken place, and has grown tremendously from last year. The program is looking forward to continued success.
