Garden City, N.Y. -
For the second consecutive year, Adelphi University student-athletes traveled to Old Mill Elementary School to read to children as part of the PTA sponsored "Parents as Reading Partners" (PARP) Program.
Members of Adelphi University's CHAMPS/Lifeskills were invited to participate in the guest reader week at the school, which took place from February 11-15. The volunteers came not only represent their school and team, but to spend some time in the classroom reading to the children.
In total 15 student-athletes spent an hour reading to children in to various classrooms. The following student athletes made contributions:
Kelsey Hackett and Anna Gabbard (Women's Volleyball)
Tomasz Walczak, Alex Molotsky, Anton Voynov, and Joe Carbone (Men's Tennis)
Tom Eickelberg and Carlos Techera (Cross Country)
Rachel Ray, Laura Bennett, Michelle Ceraso, Nicole Lieberman, and Emily Simpson (Women's Lacrosse)
Shane Flanagan (Men's Soccer)
The goal of PARP is to reinforce the concept that education and learning should be significant throughout the students' lives. With this year's theme, Old Mill Road wanted to demonstrate that college and professional athletes as well as media representatives are actively sending this same important message about education, and use student-athletes as role models for the students.
