A Brief History of African-Athletics at Adelphi
On Sunday, February 24, 2008, the Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in association with the Office of Alumni Relations will hosts its 6th Annual Black History Month Celebration; Honoring the accomplishments of student-athletes and alumni of color. The event will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center and will feature Alicia M. Crowe, Esq., author of Real Dads Stand Up!
"The continued support from the athletic department and university has been the true success of this event," said Suzette McQueen, Assistant Athletic Director for External Relations & Media and coordinator of the event. "Each year we are able to connect our student-athletes and alumni while also sharing a powerful message of success and perseverance."
Currently a Deputy Town Attorney in the Town of Ramapo, Crowe is a partner in the law firm of Crowe & Crowe with her identical twin sister, Alice T. Crowe. She holds a B.A. Degree in Political Science from Adelphi University and a J.D. Degree from Howard University School of Law. "Real Dads Stand Up! was written to give single fathers a greater understanding of their rights under the legal system," explains Crowe who has represented fathers and mothers in family court cases for over a decade.
Crowe is a sought-after legal expert on the topic and has been featured several times as a professional expert on BET J's "My Two Cents", "The Wendy Williams Experience" where her book was selected as July 2007's "Book Of The Month," Rev. Al Sharpton's radio show "Sharp Talk," WRKS 98.7 Kiss FM's "Open Line," Power 105.1's "The Power Hour" with Minister Kevin," WBLS' "Express Yourself," and WLIB's "Mind Flight," both hosted by Gary Byrd, The Bev Smith Show on American Urban Radio, Pacifica Radio WBAI-FM, and Krights Radio.com. The book has also been discussed on The Tom Joyner Morning Show and featured on AOL Black Voices, Allhiphop.com, My Brothers.com and more.
The event, which consists of a brunch, is open to the public. Over the years, with the assistance of the Multicultural Alumni Chapter, it has attracted many alumni back to campus, many who had lost touch with the university. The keynote speakers have included former Adelphi Dean of Athletics and Head Track Coach Ron Bazil, Congressman Gregory Meeks '75, author Patricia Elam '76, and Board of Trustees Kenneth Banks '74 and Dr. N. Gerry House.
Approximately 150 alumni, current athletes and administrators are scheduled to attend the celebration. The event is open to the public but advanced notice is highly recommended.
