October Events
Adelphi University and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will support Breast Cancer Awareness through the month of October in support of Jennifer Montgomery as part of its AU Athletics "Thinks Pink" campaign.
Jennifer is the wife of former Adelphi men's soccer coach, Bob Montgomery, and the catalyst for the fund-raiser. She is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all proceeds from the department's efforts will be donated in her name to the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. "Jennifer is a part of the Adelphi family," Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Robert Hartwell said. "She and Bob have been associated with our department for over 30 years and their children have attended the school and played soccer here. It is only right that we do something to help and I hope this can become an annual event."
Throughout the month of October, the Athletic Department will use variety of opportunities to promote its message. Student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators have joined forces to sell pink wristbands embossed with the "AU Athletics Thinks Pink" message for $2.
In addition, many of the athletic teams are donating baskets which will be raffled off at the end of October. Lastly, Jennifer, who designs holiday wreaths, has donated three of her creations to also be included in the raffle. Raffle tickets are 1 for $3, 3 for $5 and body-length for $20.
"Taking care of your health should be a priority," Jennifer said. "Too often we put off making important health appointments such as a mammography thinking we can do it later when we have time. That can be a deadly mistake. Early detection is key to beating and treating breast cancer.Nothing is ever a guarantee when it comes to our health but we need to do whatever is in our power to get us as close as possible".
Bracelets and raffle tickets will be sold all month long by the teams and committee members. In addition, tables will be set up in the Ruth S. Harley University Center on October 17 and 18, from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. to distribute informational materials and sell items.
All of the fall sports teams are getting into the action as well and will be sporting "Think Pink" warm-up t-shirts at several home games in October. The t-shirts, which are being underwritten by Adelphi University's Student Government Association, will also be available for sale for $10.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program was founded in 1980 and was the first program of its kind in NYS exclusively addressing the psychosocial issues associated with breast cancer. The program serves as a clearinghouse for breast cancer resources and organizations throughout New York State.
As the only NY statewide toll free breast cancer hotline, they answer almost 4,000 calls each year and have over 350,000 web site visits each year. The center is staffed by over 100 specially trained, professionally supervised volunteers, most of whom are breast cancer survivors.
