Adelphi University student-athletes traveled to Old Mill Elementary School to read to children as part of the PTA sponsored "Parents as Reading Partners" (PARP) Program which runs from January 29-February 28. This year's theme is "Be Active...Read" with a focus on health, sports and wellness.
Members of Adelphi's CHAMPS/Lifeskills were invited to participate in the guest reader week from February 12-16. The volunteers came not only represent their school and team, but to spend some time in the classroom reading to the children.
In total 15 student-athletes spent an hour reading to children in kindergarden and second grade and those in grades 4-6. On Monday, Lauren Flanagan, Kelsey Hackett, Ginna-Lee Tamburello (volleyball), Caitlin Morrison, Kayte Kinsley, Michelle Giovanniello (women's soccer) and Alana daSilva and Julie Schaper (softball) traveled to Old Mill Road. On Friday, Brittany Hess (women's soccer), Rachel Ray and Laura Bennett (women's lacrosse) and O'Hare, Georgio Liasi, Val Charalambous and Rob Philippou (men's soccer) made the trip.
The goal of PARP is to reinforce the concept that education and learning should be significant throughout the students lives. With this year's theme, Old Mill Road wanted to demonstrate that college and professional athletes as well as media representatives are actively sending this same important message about education.
