The 2004-05 season was filled with many memorable moments, culminating with the NYCAC Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the most outstanding overall athletic program in the conference. In the eleven-year history of the league, Adelphi has captured the Commissioner's Cup on six occasions, including four of the last five years.
In addition, four Adelphi teams made NCAA Tournament appearances. The women's soccer team earned its third NCAA berth and the women's lacrosse team also made a repeat appearance. The men's basketball team returned to the NCAA Tournament after a one-year hiatus and the baseball program earned its first NCAA berth since 1999.
In addition, six Adelphi athletes earned All-America honors.
Fall 2004 Highlights
Men's/Women's Cross Country
The men's cross country team placed third at the New York Collegiate Conference championships (NYCAC) for the third consecutive year, while the women placed third as well, improving two spots from a year ago. The men and women also produced top-five finishes at the Wagner Invite.
Junior Mike Marzano (Whitestone, N.Y.) led the men all-season and earned second-team all-conference honors with a 12th place overall finish (28:40) at the conference championship meet. Marzano was also named the NYCAC cross country male scholar-athlete of the year.
The women were paced by senior Katie DiPietro (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) who finished ninth overall (21:06) at the conference championships and was a second-team all-conference selection. DiPietro was also honored as the NYCAC cross country female scholar-athlete of the year for the second consecutive season.
Men's Soccer (6-9-1, 1-3-1 Atlantic Soccer Conference)
The men's soccer team opened the season with 17 new faces on the roster and had their struggles early. But by the end of the season the Panthers came together to win three of their last five games. Adelphi posted some impressive wins this season, on the road at Syracuse (2-1) and Columbia (2-1) and at home against Manhattan (3-2 OT).
Senior Tal Sheinfeld (Even Yehoda, Israel) led the Panthers in every major statistical category this season and was named an ASC first-team selection for his efforts. Sheinfeld was second in the conference in points per game (1.48), goals per game (0.50) and assists per game (0.44). Sophomore Dieudonne Nonga (Jamaica, N.Y.) was a second-team selection. Nonga was third on the team in points with eight, second in assists (4) and tied for third in goals (2).
Sheinfeld was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America All-District team for the second consecutive season. In 2003 he was a second-team selection, while he received first-team honors in 2004.
Women's Soccer (20-4-1, 9-2 NYCAC)
The 2004 women's soccer team proved to be a record-setting year. First, the Panthers earned its third straight appearance. Then they went on to capture their third consecutive NCAA Northeast Regional title and advance to their first NCAA Final Four since 1992.
In order to earn the trip to Wichita Falls, Texas, the Panthers defeated regional rivals Franklin Pierce for the first-time in program history, advancing on penalty kicks. This game proved to the 200th Adelphi career win for Head Coach Rich Ilsley. His overall total stands at 258. The team also set a new school record for most wins with 20 and captured the conference's first ever NYCAC Tournament title.
In the NCAA Tournament, Adelphi advanced to the championship game before being edged by Metro State, 3-2, in the final seconds. Senior Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.) led the Panthers in scoring for the fourth consecutive season. For her efforts she took home a host of honors, including All-NYCAC first-team (her fourth conference selection), first team All-Northeast Region and second-team NSCAA All-American selections. She also was NYCAC player of the year and tournament MVP and collected six goals and two assists in the Division II tournament, including both Adelphi goals in the championship game.
Also receiving post-season honors was sophomore Catherine Wyndham (Lynbrook, N.Y.) named to the All-Northeast Region team. A total of five players were named to the All-NYCAC team with junior Shannon McEntee (Valley Stream, N.Y.) joining Coiro and Wyndham on the first-team. Seniors Josefa Pace (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Dina Cali (Valley Stream, N.Y.) earned second-team honors.
The Panthers also excelled in the classroom with McEntee, Pace, Coiro and Cali each being named CoSida Academic All-District, the first for the program since 1992.
Women's Tennis (7-4, 6-2 NYCAC)
The women's tennis had a solid 2004 season, finishing the year with a record of 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the conference, clinching the third seed in the NYCAC team tournament. Adelphi faced off against second seeded Philadelphia in the first round, falling 5-0.
Adelphi freshman Claudia Nunez (Aventura, Florida) had an outstanding debut season with the Panthers. Nunez advanced to the finals of the conference flight championships at number one singles and was named NYCAC Rookie of the Year. She also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional.
Volleyball (20-14, 7-4 NYCAC)
The volleyball had their most successful season in the history of the program in 2004, setting a new record for win in a season with 20. Adelphi finished the year 20-14 overall and 7-4 in the conference which placed them fifth in the conference, an improvement of four spots from a year ago.
Adelphi also competed in the ECAC Division II volleyball tournament for the first time in program history. The Panthers earned the #3 seed and faced #2 St. Rose in the semi-finals. Adelphi upset the Black Knights but fell to Bridgeport in the final, earning runner-up honors.
Senior Sharon Ribera (Hollis, N.Y.) was named a NYCAC first-team all-conference selection at the libero position. She led the team in digs and set a new single season record with 463. Ribera was also third on the team in service aces (36).
The Panthers also played well at several tournaments with freshman Christina Vandling (Endicott, N.Y.) being named to the Kutztown and Bentley Classic all-tournament teams. Sophomores Brittany (Menden, NV) was named to the Bentley Classic all-tournament team and sophomore Rachael Cornick (Endicott, N.Y.) was an all-tournament selection at the AIC Stinger Classic.
Winter 2004-05 Highlights
Men's Basketball (22-7, 21-3 NYCAC)
The men's basketball team won the NYCAC regular season title for the first time since 2002 and received an NCAA Division II tournament berth for the 10th time in 11 seasons. The Panthers received the third seed in the Northeast Regional.
Head Coach James Cosgrove was named NYCAC Coach of the Year for guiding Adelphi to the regular season title, while sophomore Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was a second-team All-NYCAC and second-team All-MET selection. Blaize led the Panthers in scoring (12.1), three-pointers made (70) and three-point percentage (40%). He was also third in the NYCAC in three-pointers made.
Adelphi also received national respect from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). The NABC ranked the Panthers as high as #19 in their coaches' poll during the season.
Women's Basketball (15-13, 14-10 NYCAC)
Adelphi jumped out to a promising start for the 2004-05 season, winning its first seven straight. A southern trip to Florida set the Panthers on a downward spiral, as they dropped their next six contests. The team rebounded, but found themselves on a roller coaster ride for the remainder of the season, finally settling down to win their last four regular season games to earn a fifth place seed in the NYCAC Tournament. Adelphi fell to New Haven in overtime in the first-round, 71-69.
Junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) led the Panthers all season, averaging 16.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. For her efforts she was named both a first-team All-NYCAC and a first-team All-Met selection.
Hurdle, along with senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) each cracked the 1,000th career points mark. Mangone finishes her Adelphi career with 1161 points, ranking tenth overall. Hurdle, with 1029 points returns for her senior year in 2005-06 with the potential to become Adelphi's all-time points leader.
Swimming
Both the men's and women's swim teams closed out their seasons with identical 5-4 marks in dual meets. The Panthers also had a strong showing at both the Metropolitan Championships (METs) where both teams placed ninth and the ECAC championships were the women placed 22nd and the men 23rd.
Freshman Charlie Castillo (Uniondale, N.Y.) had two top-five finishes at METs, placing third in the 200 yard breaststroke and fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke. He also qualified for ECAC's in both events, while teammates Matt Jordan (Valley Stream, N.Y.) qualified in the 50 yard freestyle and senior John Conciatori (Whitestone, N.Y.) qualified in the 100 yard backstroke. Freshman Timmy Mueller (Merrick, N.Y.) swam the 100 yard butterfly at ECAC's.
Sophomore Jerri Lester (El Paso, TX) led the way for the women, placing second in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke at METs. Lester also qualified for ECAC's in four different events, the 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard breaststroke and the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, placing ninth in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Lester and Castillo also qualified for NCAA's, with Lester qualifying in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke, while Castillo made the cut in the 200 yard breaststroke.
Spring 2005 Highlights
Baseball (25-19, 13-7 NYCAC)
The baseball team opened their season with an eight game southern swing that included games in both Florida and Georgia. The Panthers returned from their spring trip with a record of 1-7 overall, but bounced back to go 21-8 over their last 29 regular season games and tied for second place in the NYCAC with a record of 13-7.
The Panthers won their first two match-ups in the double-elimination conference tournament before falling to Dowling in the third round. In the semi-finals Adelphi topped Concordia to earn a place in the championship game against Dowling. In the final Adelphi held a 5-3 advantage heading into the top of the eighth inning but ultimately fell 7-5.
Adelphi also received their first NCAA Regional berth since the 1999 season when they were selected as the third seed in the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional. Head Coach Dom Scala was voted NYCAC Coach of the Year, while junior Doug Anderson (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) was a first-team all-conference selection and juniors Tom Cali (Shirley, N.Y.) and Mike Thompson (Bethpage, N.Y.) each received second-team honors. Cali was also honored as a second-team all-region selection.
Men's Lacrosse (4-6, 2-3 NYCAC)
The men's lacrosse team opened the season with 15 newcomers on the roster and played one of the most ambitious schedules in the country. The Panthers ended the season with a 4-6 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the NYCAC to go along with a national ranking of eighth.
Junior Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia) returned to the form that made him an All-American in 2003. Leading the Panthers in points (49), goals (37) and he tied for second in assists (12). Green was second in the nation in goals per game (3.7) and fourth in points per game (4.9)
For his efforts Green was a first-team all-conference selection at attack along with senior Frank Canizio (Farmingdale, N.Y.) who was a first-team all-conference selection at defense.
Women's Lacrosse (14-2)
The women's lacrosse team entered the 2005 season with a No. 1 ranking and the goal of becoming the first Division II program to repeat as NCAA Champions. The Panthers fell short of their goal of a repeat title, but did make their second straight NCAA appearance, setting a school record for most wins in a season in the process. Adelphi advanced to the NCAA Tournament after an exciting 13-12 come-from behind victory over cross-town rival, C.W. Post. In the NCAA semi-finals the Panthers fell to eventual champions, Stonehill, 13-6. In fact, the Chieftans were the only team to beat Adelphi this season, handing the Panthers their only two losses.
Senior Katherine Hock (Mineola, N.Y.) graduates as one of the most decorated female athletes in Adelphi history. A four-time All-America, she leaves Adelphi as the program's career leader in points (272) and goals (224). Her 224 career goals also top the Division II record books. Hock scored four goals in the NCAA semi-finals and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.
Joining Hock on the IWLCA All-America team were junior Melissa Demasi (Shirley, N.Y.) and sophomore Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) on the first-team. Junior Dawn Anselmin (Lynbrook, N.Y.) was named a second-team selection. These same athletes, along with sophomore Diana Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) and junior Mary Cannata earned All-Northeast Region honors.
Adelphi will return all of its starters, with the exception of Hock, for the 2006 season.
Softball (25-16, 17-7 NYCAC)
The 2005 season marked Adelphi's tenth season as a Division II program under the direction of Head Coach
Kate Whalen. Picked to finish second in the NYCAC Preseason Coaches Poll, the Panthers finished fourth overall with a 17-7 conference record. The Panthers season ended in the first round of the NYCAC Tournament, upset by #5 seed the University of Bridgeport, 1-0.
Despite an early end to their season, the Panthers garnered many post-season accolades. Junior Amy Delmore (Bellerose Manor, N.Y.) led the way, earning second-team All-America honors. She becomes the first Adelphi player at the Division II level to earn this award, and just the fourth all-time.
In addition, she led the conference all season in batting average and was named the NYCAC Player of the Year, also a first for Adelphi. Joining Delmore as a first-team selection was senior Tonia Trapani (Concord, CA). Seniors Ashley Spreer (New Windsor, N.Y.) and Ivy Klein (Suffern, N.Y.) along with freshman Julia Schaper (Warwick, N.Y.) were each named to the second-team.
Accolades continued for the Panthers, with five members named to the Northeast Regional team. Delmore and senior Theresa Kotulak (Clifton, N.J.) picked up first-team honors. Spreer, Schaper and sophomore Kristina LoCastro (Garden City, N.Y.) were named second-team selections.
Track and Field
The men's and women's track and field teams continue to improve with both the men and women placing 15th at the indoor Collegiate Track Conference (CTC) Championship meet held at the Armory. At that meet the men's 4x800 meter relay team finished second in a school record time of 8:02.78.
At the outdoor CTC Championship meet the women placed 12th overall while the men captured 14th. Senior Ryan Soltan captured the team's only individual title, winning the 3000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:51.88.
The Panthers also improved at the Disney Relays, with the men taking fifth overall and the women sixth.
Men's Tennis (2-9, 1-5 NYCAC)
The men's tennis team struggled through injures and inexperience this season but showed signs that strong play is on the horizon. The Panthers finished sixth in the NYCAC with a mark of 1-5. Adelphi also showed promise late in the season, picking up a 5-4 win over East Stroudsburg and a narrow loss to NJIT to end the season.
Golf
The golf team collected eight top-ten finishes this season, including a third place showing at the Goldey-Beacom Invitational. The Panthers placed fifth at the NYCAC Championships, led by freshman Jantzen Vargas who placed fifth overall in the conference with a two-day total of 159.
Adelphi is losing three of the five golfers on the team and will look to reload to get back to the NCAA Regional in 2006.
