On November 6, former Adelphi cross-country and track athlete Katie DiPietro (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and assistant sports information director Adam Siepiola (Clinton, N.Y.) will line-up with 35,000 people to travel 138, 336 feet through the five boroughs. DiPietro and Siepiola will be running the ING New York City Marathon, which starts in Staten Island and winds its way to Manhattan, to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
DiPietro, a 2005 graduate of Adelphi University with a degree in exercise physiology, is running to honor her uncle, John DiPietro, who passed away February 21, 2002.
"He was my uncle and my godfather, and since he passed away 3 years ago, I
have always wanted to do something for him," DiPietro said. "He always asked me how my running was going whenever I saw him. He knew how much I loved it. Running
the New York City Marathon has been a goal of mine since my freshman year at Adelphi, and nothing would make it more meaningful for me than to run it in his name."
Siepiola is running to honor his grandmother, Helen "Chickie" Burke, who passed away on May 3, 2005. "My grandmother was one of my biggest supporters, she was always there for me," Siepiola said. "So anything I can do in her memory and that would make her proud is unbelievable."
