The Adelphi University Athletics Department held its first-ever Black History Month Program, honoring the achievements of African American student-athletes and alumni, last Sunday afternoon at the Ruth S. Harley University Center.
The inaugural event featured former Director of Athletics and men's track coach Ron Bazil as the keynote speaker. Clyde Doughty, Jr., Director of Athletics at NYIT, served as guest speaker.
Over 150 athletes, alumni and administrators were in attendance. The St. Benedict's School of Dance under the direction of Adelphi professor Frances Rhymes provided the entertainment.
Door prizes were also awarded, including a Tuskegee Airmen leather bomber jacket donated by Avirex.
Also honored at the event was alumni Bill Henderson. The men's track team awarded him with a plaque for his heroism and bravery after saving a family from a burning house back in 1996.
The event, coordinated by the Athletics Department in conjunction with the Office of Alumni Relations, promises to be an annual event in which the contribution of African-American student-athletes, both past and present, will be honored.
