Adelphi SAAC Joins Forces With Winthrop-University Hospital's Cans For Cancer Program

Dec. 30, 2003

The Adelphi University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has teamed up with Winthrop University Hospital Cans for Cancer Program as announced by SAAC advisor and Adelphi Events Manager/Special Projects Coordinator Denee Rivera. Adelphi becomes the first collegiate institution to participate in Winthrop's recycling program. The Athletic Department, along with SAAC, will run the program on campus with proceeds going to the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York.

"It's a great opportunity for the university and its student-athletes to give back to the community," said Rivera who was instrumental in the adoption of a new recycling program on Adelphi University's Campus. "We are privileged to be the first institution to participate in a program such as this one and with the help of the Athletic Department and its student-athletes the program will benefit children with cancer in a tremendous way."

SAAC will play a voluntary/community service role by placing recycling receptacles around campus, also known as RIKI's, which will be used to collect bottles and cans for dollar value. SAAC members would then gather and sort the items to be picked up and sent to a recycling center. Adelphi student-athletes also volunteer at different events at Nassau Coliseum and assist with clearing out the RIKI's at the end of the night. In addition to Adelphi, Winthrop-University Hospital's other venues include Nassau Coliseum, Jones Beach Theater, Shea Stadium and the Brooklyn Cyclone Stadium as well as several local high schools.
